Born in the vibrant city of Singapore with a unique Eurasian blend of Portuguese and Chinese heritage, my journey has taken me from the bustling streets of Singapore to the serene and open landscapes of Sweden. My educational pursuits in Singapore culminated at tertiary level with two separate Master degrees, after which I embarked on a new adventure in 2002, moving to Sweden. In Sweden, I pursued with deep interest, the knowledge field of applied linguistics, particularly corpus linguistics research methods, earning a doctoral degree from one of northern Europe’s largest universities, the University of Gothenburg. I currently work as Project Manager, focusing on EU and international projects, at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, at the Division of Bioeconomy and Health, Department of Agriculture and Food. My office is located in Mölndal municipality. Mölndal, known also as the Valley of Mills, is located about ten minutes by bus ride from the city center of Gothenburg to the south. If you’re ever traveling south from Gothenburg to Malmö, whether by train or car, you will likely come by Mölndal municipality. In these pages at cmariec.com, you’ll find my lifestyle musings on culinary and travel adventures from Singapore to Sweden, and from when I lived and worked the Arctic City of Tromsø (2018 to mid-2022). SINGAPORE | SWEDEN | NORTHERN NORWAY Life in Singapore Pursued all academic interests in Singapore, of which the post-graduate years were founded in two separate disciplines. In 2000, graduated with two separate Masters Degrees: (i) Master of Science in Information Studies at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore (ii) Master of Arts in the English Language at the National University of Singapore (NUS). In 1999, represented the Republic of Singapore at the Miss Universe Pageant in Trinidad and Tobago. With this came a variety of film, educational TV, media, and ambassadorial work for the Singapore Tourism Board. Life in Sweden In 2002, moved from Singapore to Sweden in order to pursue a PhD in Gothenburg, where a number of international corporate head offices were located that all had a substantial business presence in Singapore and also Asia in general. In 2009, graduated with a PhD in applied critical linguistics from the faculty of humanities at the University of Gothenburg, with a cross-disciplinary thesis entitled, Swedish management in Singapore: a discourse analysis study, looking particularly into the concepts of assimilation, integration and hierarchy, at top management levels of Swedish-Asian corporations in Singapore. 2013, as research fellow at the Centre for International Business Studies (CIBS), School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, researching the future implications of increasing Asian-Swedish cooperation within the field of international business. The research focus of the project is how new technologies are perceived and accepted by users and customers, using linguistic methods of data analysis. More information can be found at RJ’s website, at Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ) Felxit 2015. Life in Northern Norway (2018-2022) 2018, late summer. I acquired new work as Market Scientist at Nofima. Having moved to the county of Troms in August, I’m currently enjoying myself, exploring the island city of Tromsø. From the 1900s, this city became known as Paris of the North due to how the people of Tromsø were exceptionally stylish and sophisticated in contrast to the fishing village preconception that many might have of a city located in the Arctic Circle. In my years in Sweden, I have known Sweden to be called the land of the midnight sun. During the long summer mights, it was beautiful to sit and watch the sun’s languid pendulation between east and west, touching the horizon out at sea before going up again. Northern Norway takes this languid pendulation of the sun to the extreme. It is not only known as the land of the midnight sun, but it is also the land of polar nights and the northern lights. This is my new adventure. And in these lifestyle blog pages, you’ll find my personal thoughts, insights and musings. Cheryl Marie Cordeiro | PhD MSc MA ACADEMIC REFLECTIONS | CV LIFESTYLE BLOG

Louis Vuitton Damier Utzés tote, sunday casual

In the Monday issue of DN a Swiss company called Pictet Funds has reportedly started a special investment fund, Premium Brands, that only specializing on well, premium brands. As for shopping, they don’t advise against buying any items that carry a premium brand in the first place since the brand and image guarantees that the product will have a certain standard regardless of what. The article goes on to tell that Armani, Prada, Cartier and Italian Bulgari beside the Swedish Absolute Vodka touch a soft spot with the Swedish investment company’s official. Personally, I would never have forgotten Louis Vuitton in a list of my own favorite brands.

Leveraging on events, beyond Nya Fröken Sverige

    miss_sweden_universe_20071.jpg

Me and Lina Hane, Miss Sweden Universe, September 14, 2007

A while back out of sheer desperation with what I read about how Sweden was dealing with their Miss Sweden Universe (Nya Fröken Sverige) event, I searched out who was running it. A few days later I met with the most considerate and charming CEO of Panos Emporio, Mr Panos himself, who after having been in the jury for some years, decided to take over the whole event in an attempt to turn the tide in Sweden back to the glamorous and high prestige event it had once been.

The treatment Miss Sweden gets in the press was so far removed from my own experiences when I took part in the Miss Universe final in 1999 that I hardly recognized what I read in the Swedish newspapers. How come the same event was seen so different in Sweden, and why?

    My love affair with jewellery

    2829.jpg

As a young girl, my parents often gave me jewellery in the form of simple gold ear studs, a gold ring and teddy bear pendants. My father would buy me silver bracelets, shell necklaces and silver bangles from Thailand and from his travels. My mother would buy me earrings, bracelets and rings in yellow gold, both to wear and to safekeep for the future.

A love affair was thus born for me, between myself and jewellery.

As I grew up, my parents bought me more lavish gifts in jewellery. I received a princess cut, channel set diamond and white gold eternity ring from my mother (also my father) when I was about 21. A sign of their love. As I am not in Singapore and as I hardly spend time with them these days, I wear this ring everyday as a sign of my love for them, keeping them close to my heart.

A woman can express herself as much with the clothes and the jewellery that she wears, as with words.

Jewellery today is as much a hobby of mine as is fashion (clothes, shoes, bags etc.).

Punk fairies and fluid 70s for Spring 2008?

Alright, I’m a slow starter. Always have been. I need time to warm up to new ideas. And at first glance now at the Spring 2008 Prada runway – I’m less than bowled over by Miuccia’s new collection.

I’ve tried all my life – literally – to run away from the 70s era. I was born then.

I’m so done with the fashion of that time. So imagine my horror when one of my favourite designers, Prada, pulls out the wide leg 70s pants! Worse still, it’s back – in floaty material! I can already imagine the cheap synthetic copies that will be out in the stores next spring. *CRINGE!*

    London, June 2007

In June 2007 I spent a few days in London in a combined business and pleasure trip. It was almost a decade since I was there last, at that time with my parents. This time I could steer my steps better and of course went directly for the fashion districts and also to seek out any and all interesting exhibitions going on. And of course food.

    Chinatown

The arrival to London from Landvetter, Gothenburg was early and after checking into the hotel, we (JE and I) explored the London Chinatown, near Leicester Square.

Isn’t it strange how Chinatowns are always crowded?

We came across a bakery that I had to go in because it reminded me so much of the neighborhood bakeries back in Singapore. Continue reading “London, June 2007”

Autumn 2007 – Wrap it with a belt!

If you’re on a budget and you’re wondering what to invest in this autumn, not wanting to buy too many new items to your wardrobe, then the belt might be an accessory to consider.

I walked away from my trip to London a few weeks ago with only ONE purchase. A cream patent leather L.K. Bennett belt which I bought from the store down Bond Street.

Belts have the ability to transform a look from simple to something more glamourous, depending on the kind of belt you use. And for a small amount of money (a belt would certainly cost less than an entire new outfit), the nipped in waist also transforms your silhouette, so you will have a different look with and without just the belt.

Here, I’ll show you how to really stretch your dollar and put that one accessory to good use or overuse. And I’m going to do that with the L.K. Bennett belt I purchased two weeks ago that looks like this:

I’m wearing it with a black knit top (French make) and vintage wool skirt (Japanese make) ensemble in the picture above.
