At the recent EUSBSR Annual Forum 2024, I met many individuals passionate about and committed to restoring the Baltic Sea. And I can see why—the coastal regions of the Baltic Sea can easily find their way into your heart. With its striking landscapes and vibrant maritime culture, the region offers experiences that go beyond mere sightseeing. The rich maritime biodiversity invites not just observation but immersion. My recent visit to Wassersleben Strand and Flensburg, Germany, reinforced my appreciation for how these areas balance tourism with ecological responsibility. However, with popularity comes the challenge of maintaining a delicate balance between economic growth through tourism and environmental conservation. It was with this perspective that I spent my time in Wassersleben and Flensburg, observing how policies and practices are implemented to shape sustainable tourism and understanding their significance for both locals and visitors alike.

Aalborg’s Allure: Sustainable Travel and Culinary Delights by the Fjord

There’s something innately soothing about the sea—a powerful calm that washes over you as you set sail on an adventure. Starting from Gothenburg, Sweden, the journey to Aalborg, Denmark, began with an early morning ferry ride that promised not just transit, but an experience. The soft lapping of waves against the hull, the crisp, salty breeze, and the horizon stretching infinitely under the golden glow of sunrise set the perfect tone for the trip ahead.

A little bit of Italy at Åboulevard, Copenhagen, Denmark

Åboulevard or ‘River’ Boulevard.
Åboulevard is one of the more scenic routes to bike or walk in central Copenhagen, Denmark.

Most days are gelato days for me, regardless the country or season. After walking around much of central Copenhagen in the evenings for supper, it was still the gelati found at the little Italian shop right next door to the hotel at which I was housed that drew me back to their modest quarters. With walls lined with scenes from southern coastal Italy, it felt like sunshine to walk into the place, even at sundown.

In the footsteps of Anna Ancher and Marie Krøyer at Skagen, 2011

At the very, very northernmost point of Denmark is Grenen, the point where the two
seas of Skagerrak and Kattegatt meet. Here you can literary stand with one foot in each sea.

In a landscape of muted pastels that continued to appeal even under the grey of the rain clouds hovering above, I felt it was surprisingly heavy and tiring to walk in the shifting sand of the long beach that led up to Grenen. An aspect that might not be immediately apparent when just looking at the famous paintings by Peder Severin Krøyer of the Skagen Painters that have Grenen as a theme, just north of the northernmost fishing village Skagen at the very tip of the Danish peninsula.

Krøyer was probably the most well known of the artists that lived and worked here from the late 1870s until the turn of the century, and it is his paintings too, amongst all Skagen artists, that attract me most. In fact, a reproduction of one of his most famous paintings, Hip Hip Hurra!, of a summer party held in Michael Ancher’s garden in 1884, adorns one of our guest room walls at home. Ancher belonged to Krøyer’s circle of artist friends, though with a different temperament altogether.

The last visit to a Louis Vuitton store in Singapore was in 2016. From the bustling streets of Orchard Road to the iconic Marina Bay Sands, Louis Vuitton has always had a special place in the heart of Singapore. The store at Marina Bay Sands, with its unmistakable presence, is particularly memorable. Each time I step into a Louis Vuitton store, it feels like entering a museum of fashion, design, and innovation, where every element is curated with exquisite attention to detail.

Over the years, my visits to Louis Vuitton in Singapore have charted a journey through the evolution of luxury fashion. Each visit brought with it a new theme, a fresh collection, and an inspiring story. From the pastel shades of the 2017 Summer Collection to the bold prints introduced in the 2019 lines, each piece reflected Louis Vuitton’s commitment to staying ahead of its time, yet firmly rooted in its heritage.
