As the summer sun graces the charming coastal city of Helsingborg, Sweden, it brings with it one of the most anticipated events of the year – Helsingborgs Konst- & Antikmässa. This year, the fair promises to be even more special as it celebrates its 60th anniversary, marking six decades of showcasing exquisite antiques and fine art. Held from July 25 to 28 at the modern Helsingborg Arena, the fair is not just an event but an experience that blends history, culture, and a passion for the finer things in life.
A Memorable Vernissage Event
I had the pleasure of attending the Vernissage event, which took place on the evening of July 24, just before the fair officially opened. The Vernissage is an exclusive preview event, providing a first look at the stunning array of antiques and art pieces on display. The atmosphere was electric with excitement as collectors, dealers, and enthusiasts gathered to admire and discuss the carefully curated exhibits.
The evening began with a welcoming speech by the fair organizers, highlighting the fair’s rich history and its significance in the world of antiques. Champagne flowed, and elegant hors d’oeuvres were served, adding a touch of sophistication to the event. The Vernissage provided an intimate setting to engage with the exhibitors, who were eager to share the stories behind their treasured items.
A Glimpse into the Fair
Helsingborgs Konst- & Antikmässa is a treasure trove for antique hunters and art aficionados. The fair’s 2024 edition features an impressive collection of items ranging from classic furniture, ornate rugs, and intricate sculptures to delicate ceramics, glittering jewelry, and elegant glassware. Each piece tells a story, carefully curated by knowledgeable exhibitors from the Swedish Art and Antique Dealers’ Association (SKAF) and the United Art and Antique Dealers (FAK). This collaboration ensures that every item meets the highest standards of authenticity and quality.
This year’s highlight is the “Legendary Louis Vuitton – Bags & Trunks” exhibition. This special display features a private collection of Louis Vuitton bags designed for or owned by celebrities, set against backdrops that evoke the golden age of travel. It’s a rare opportunity to see such iconic pieces up close and appreciate the craftsmanship and history behind them.
Engaging and Educational Seminars
Visitors to Helsingborgs Konst- & Antikmässa can look forward to a wide range of seminars and guided tours that are both informative and engaging. Held on the second floor of Helsingborg Arena in Gerdas sal, these sessions do not require pre-registration—just show up and enjoy the wealth of knowledge shared by the experts. To participate in a guided tour, sign up at the information desk on site to secure your access to headphones.
Some seminar highlights include Fredrik Zimmerdahl delving into the fascinating history of the Paris World’s Fair of 1925, offering insights into the cultural and artistic significance of this landmark event. Another highly anticipated seminar is by Charlotte Strömstedt, who will explore the rich heritage of Skåne’s folklore treasures, providing an in-depth look at the region’s unique cultural artifacts. Björn Gremner will present on East India porcelain, often referred to as the “white gold,” detailing its historical trade significance and exquisite craftsmanship. Bo Knutsson’s seminar on Wiwen Nilsson, a world-renowned artist from Skåne, will shed light on his life and work, emphasizing his contributions to the art world.
Exploring Helsingborg
While the fair is a significant draw, the coastal city of Helsingborg itself is a gem worth exploring. Nestled along the Öresund strait, this picturesque city offers a blend of rich history and modern amenities. Wander through the historic Kärnan tower, a medieval fortress offering panoramic views of the city and the sea. The beautiful Sofiero Palace and its lush gardens provide a tranquil escape, while the city’s bustling harbor is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a delightful meal at one of its many seaside restaurants.
Helsingborg is also known for its cultural vibrancy, with numerous museums, galleries, and theaters. The Dunkers Kulturhus, a contemporary arts center, regularly hosts exhibitions, concerts, and performances, adding to the city’s dynamic cultural scene.
Why This Year is Special
The 60th anniversary of Helsingborgs Konst- & Antikmässa makes this year particularly special. It’s a celebration of the fair’s enduring legacy and its role in promoting and preserving art and antiques. For six decades, the fair has been a cornerstone event, drawing visitors from around the world to experience the unique charm and history of Helsingborg. This milestone year not only honors the past but also looks forward to continuing this cherished tradition for many more years to come.
