On 9th May, 2009, I graduated with a PhD in the field of general linguistics, specializing in the study of International management, specifically that of Swedish management in Singapore. Prior to my doctoral studies in Sweden, I have pursued all academic interests in Singapore. In year 2000 I graduated with two separate masters degrees, a Master of Science in Information Studies and a Master of Arts in the English Language from two of the top ranking universities in Asia, the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore and the National University of Singapore (NUS). During this time I also had the pleasure of representing the Republic of Singapore at the International Miss Universe Pageant in Trinidad and Tobago in 1999. In a number of articles, I've put forth the view that the more important of these high profile events are splendid political and business networking opportunities that should be supported by better training of the girls sent abroad, after which I spent some time with a few assignments in the executive part of the PR, fashion and modeling industry. After having considered pursuing higher studies in law, I decided to continue with Linguistics and the study of language as a social process. My main interest is in critical discourse analysis (CDA), and to see if I can make that bear onto international business administration like human resource management, business negotiations, mergers and acquisitions. What I’m doing is specifically researching how one can use discourse analysis as a tool to help better international business, and to show how different cultural backgrounds can make or break any cross-national deal, however brilliant things look on paper. So the end of 2002 found me leaving Singapore to pursue a PhD in the field of general linguistics, in Sweden. Being born and brought up in Singapore, international trade in an multicultural environment is second nature to me, a natural state of things. A background I have found quite useful. My personal blog as you also find here, is just my way of staying in contact with my friends, now very much spread out of the entire globe. I also do love to read, write, cook, eat and travel and don't mind sharing this with anyone interested. Singapore has an apparent westernized business environment, much appreciated by western corporations trying to establish a business foothold in Asia. Singapore has even been called “Asia Light” because of its accommodating attitude to multi-culturality but as my research findings indicate, the differences run deeper than what appears on the surface. To research the success factors behind western managers working in Asia is one of my main interests and I am now in the process of sharing this information with the world. Please feel free to contact me regarding any research, business or communication needs or ideas you might have in this area. Dr. Cheryl M. Cordeiro-Nilsson
